Indo-Iran Workshop to Develop Cooperation in Biotechnology
New Delhi, August 3-4, 2017

 BIOTECHNOLOGY

Introduction

There is increasing international recognition that science- and technology-intensive solutions can significantly improve the quality of life. This is particularly true where biotechnology is concerned, since this field is of paramount interest for health (including the development of new medicines, vaccines and diagnostic procedures), agriculture (through the generation of plants with improved nutritional value and biotic- and abiotic-stress resistant crops), and the environmental sectors. To be effective, however, such research-driven solutions must not be restricted to developed countries, but need to be directly implemented in developing countries themselves. Towards this goal, a serious effort is required to build human capacities in the developing world.

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB, New Delhi) is an international, non-profit research organization with its headquarters located in Trieste, Italy. Established as a special project of UNIDO, it became fully autonomous in 1994 and now counts over 60 Member States. The key biotechnological issues are central to the mission of the ICGEB, a unique research institution blending high standard academic goals, focused on developing countries and a mandate on capacity building.

The Science & Technology International Cooperation (Bilateral) Division of the Department of Science and Technology (Govt of India) is the major supporter for building international cooperation in the field of science and technology. The International Cooperation Division has the mandated responsibility of (i) negotiating, concluding and implementing S&T Agreements between India and other countries; (ii) providing interventions on S&T aspects in international forums.

Iran and India share many historical & cultural commonalities. In addition, the economic relations between the two countries have been constantly growing. However, there is a need to build up cooperation in the field of biotechnology to solve common medical and agricultural related problems, and develop products and related services which may be mutually beneficial.

Indo-Iran Workshop to Develop Cooperation in Biotechnology (3-4 August, 2017) is being organized at ICGEB New Delhi. The workshop is supported by the Department of Science & Technology (Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India) and the Iranian Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. The main aim of the workshop is to bring together scientists from India and Iran to develop research collaborations in the field of biotechnology. The joint research programme may help to solve specific issues in the medical and agricultural sciences, which are common to both countries.
